Syed Sadequain Ahmed Naqvi (1930-1987) was a renowned Pakistani artist, best known for his skills as a calligrapher and painter. Born into a family of calligraphers in Amroha, India, he is considered one of the finest artists Pakistan has ever produced. His unique visual vocabulary stems from merging Eastern calligraphy with Western expressionism, creating a distinctive style that revolutionized Pakistani art.

Sadequain's artistic journey began in the late 1940s when he joined the Progressive Writers and Artists Movement. His true talent was discovered by Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, who brought him into the limelight. He gained international recognition after spending time in Paris, where he refined his unique style that bridged Eastern and Western artistic traditions.
He was known for his tireless work ethic and preference for large-scale public murals. Sadequain frequently stated that he was not interested in decorating the drawing rooms of the rich and powerful, preferring to create art for the public. His murals can be found in many important buildings across Pakistan.
Sadequain was part of the broader Islamic art movement known as the Hurufiyah movement, which emerged across North Africa and parts of Asia in the 1950s. As a pioneer of this style, he brought calligraphy into mainstream art, influencing generations of Pakistani artists who followed.
Born into a family of calligraphers with a 400-year tradition of Quranic calligraphy. Although largely self-taught as an artist, he was immersed in poetry, literature, and calligraphy from a young age.
Recipient of Tamgha-e-Imtiaz (Medal of Excellence), Pride of Performance, and Sitara-e-Imtiaz (Star of Excellence) from the Government of Pakistan. In 1960, he received the prestigious award at the Paris Biennale.
